Miami Springs, FL – Miami-Dade County Commissioner District 6 Rebeca Sosa presented Curtiss Mansion Inc. (CMI) with a check for $2,500 that demonstrates her continuing support for the rehabilitation and reconstruction for the Curtiss Mansion. “I am greatly excited at the prospect of National Landmark designation for this bona fide American treasure in our own community,” stated the Commissioner. “I personally will continue to do whatever I can to help realize this project, and I urge everyone who can also assist with this quest to respond to the CMI call for artifacts and documents. With the involvement of the whole community, we will succeed. After all, it really does take a village.”
Earlier this week, CMI announced that it is partnering with the City of Miami Springs to apply for National Landmark designation for the Curtiss Mansion, the Miami Springs home of Glenn H. Curtiss, founder of Miami Springs, Hialeah, and Opa-locka, renowned aviation pioneer and inventor, Congressional Medal of Honor and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient, acclaimed Great Floridian, and Father of Naval Aviation.
The Curtiss Mansion, already listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its Pueblo Mission Revival architecture (both individually and as part of a thematic group), also qualifies for the more prestigious and exclusive designation as a Landmark since it is the only remaining home or structure directly associated with Glenn H. Curtiss.
Currently, there are fewer than 2,500 landmarks in the nation. In Miami-Dade County, only Vizcaya, the Biltmore Hotel, and the presidential railroad car “Ferdinand Magellan United States Car No. 1” are designated landmarks.
CMI President JoEllen Morgan Phillips stated, “CMI needs your help. The application process is long and involved and requires a load of documentation. I know that there are relevant photos, newspaper articles, journal entries, artifacts, invitations, or other memorabilia hiding in closets around Miami Springs, Hialeah and Opa-locka. We are interested in information from 1925-1930 when Mr. Curtiss was in residence at the Mansion, as well as during its subsequent transformations as home of the Wheelers and later the Miami Springs Villas. No matter how insignificant an item may appear to you, it may be very important for the designation.”
Dr. Paul George, historian for the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, noted historic tour guide, and college professor, said, “The Curtiss Mansion is our most significant historic preservation project at this time. I will be working with CMI to make certain that the Mansion and Mr. Curtiss finally get the notice they so justly deserve. They are an extremely important part of our local and national history and their stories need to be told. We hope that everyone who can will participate and put the Mansion on the map.”
If the application is accepted by the Department of the Interior, the designation will commit the National Park Service to assisting with the preservation of this irreplaceable property through the National Historic Landmarks Assistance Initiative for technical assistance, education, and partnership building that will ensure its long-term preservation.
